LM RADAR is a community coalition. Its Community Advisory Board is comprised of members from many sectors in the community. Its strength comes in its unique ability to bring together diverse constituents from business and civic, to government and schools to law enforcement, healthcare, parents and faith based organizations. It takes a whole community to help our youth make healthy choices and to change environmental and community norms so that risk factors are reduced and protective factors are increased.
LM RADAR at work in the Community
LM RADAR has been actively involved in a number of initiatives in the community. Some of the most recent initiatives are:
American Medicine Chest Challenge. Prescription drug abuse among teens is on the rise. That's why our community participated in the American Medicine Chest Challenge. The Village of Larchmont, Village of Mamaroneck, and Town of Mamaroneck Police Departments served as collection sites for unused or expired medicines. Community members were asked to take inventory of their prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Adults should lock their medicine cabinets, use all medicines only as prescribed, and dispose of unused medicines properly. Most importantly, parents should talk to their kids about the dangers of prescription drugs and how they can lead to addiction.
Family Day: A day to eat dinner with your children. Each year on the 4th Monday of September, RADAR joins with other communities throughout the United States to celebrate Family Day. Research from The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University has shown that the more time you spend with your children the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use other drugs, and, that children/teens who have frequent family dinners are at half the risk for substance abuse compared to teens who dine with their families infrequently. For Family Day 2008, RADAR promoted local awareness through a collaborative effort with many restaurants in the community. The participating restaurants offered families dining together a discount on their meals. Over 4000 Family Day brochures were mailed to families in the community. Redeemable coupons that could be used any time over a four day period surrounding the national observance were included in the brochures. Good media coverage of our campaign further expanded the reach of the important message of Family Day.
Girl Scout Training. In fall 2007, RADAR provided training for the local Girl Scout troop leaders on how their work as Girl Scout leaders provides a strong protective factor for the girls, helping to keep them safe from drugs and alcohol. The training showed how the Girl Scout mission is connected to and supports the Positive Youth Development Strategy (see chart). The Girl Scouts have a strong presence in our community with 40 troops in Larchmont-Mamaroneck serving over 500 girls, kindergarten through 12th grade.
TIPS. In spring 2008, RADAR provided TIPS (Training for Intervention Procedures) for employees of local clubs. The skills-based training program teaches server/sellers of alcohol how to become better able to prevent intoxication, drunk driving, and underage drinking. This year, 2008-2009, RADAR plans to offer training to local businesses involved with off-premise sales.
Youth Dialogue Day. On May 21 2008, RADAR sponsored the community's first Youth Dialogue Day. Approximately 60 community leaders gathered at Larchmont Avenue Church to listen to a panel of Mamaroneck High School students talk about issues and concerns of importance to teens today. In addition to the panel discussion, the adults also watched a film produced by MHS teens showing "A Day in the Live of a MHS Student." Following the film and the panel discussion, the adults participated in small group discussions to share thoughts on what they just heard. Some issues that surfaced as a priority to work on were: the need for more opportunities for positive social engagement for teens; the importance of consistent enforcement of laws and policies; the need for more meaningful communication between parents and their teens; and the need for better support for development of strong self-esteem among our teens. A Community Task Force on Youth Issues was formed September 2008 to continue the work begun at Youth Dialogue Day. (see below)
Community Task Force on Youth Issues. On October 6, 2008, the Community Task Force on Youth Issues held its first meeting. The Task Force is made up of adult volunteers from all across the community is working on developing strategies and activities to address some of the issues raised at Youth Dialogue Day. The focus of effort for 2008-2009 is on creating more opportunities for activities for teens during the high risk time of 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on weekdays. A newly formed Youth Advisory Council (see below) is working with the Task Force on this plan.
Youth Advisory Council. Along with the Community Task Force on Youth Issues, another important group to develop as a result of Youth Dialogue Day, 2008, is the Youth Advisory Council. Youth Dialogue Day opened the door to increasing communication between youth and adults; the Youth Advisory Council will work to keep this channel of communication between the teens in our community and the key adult decision makers open.. The Council is made up of Mamaroneck High School students. They are currently partnering with the Community Task Force on Youth Issues researching community activities currently available to teens; surveying teen interests in activities; and, brainstorming possibilities of new opportunities that might be developed.
